An overwhelming 5.9k Australians have voiced strong opposition to the proposed “spare room tax” discussed at the Government’s recent Productivity Roundtable.
Although the idea remains just a proposal and is not currently on the agenda, the fact that it has not been ruled out by the Federal Labor Government is causing significant concern—particularly among low- to middle-income earners across the country.
This controversial proposal could unfairly impact:
Many fear that such a policy would amount to an invasion of privacy—stripping individuals of the right to decide how they use and configure their own homes.
At a time when Australians are already struggling with a cost-of-living crisis, penalising people for how many rooms they have is neither a fair nor effective way to address the housing shortage. Instead of resorting to punitive measures, the Labor Government should pursue positive, ethical, and incentive-based policies to encourage voluntary downsizing and better utilise available housing stock.
By officially ruling out this proposal, the government can alleviate the growing anxiety and uncertainty felt by thousands of Australians.
